Bushmen ‘tortured’ for hunting in Botswana

Police and wildlife guards in Botswana are torturing San men arrested for hunting, says Survival International. Driving vehicles, they allegedly chased three men for hours in blistering heat in the desert, then beat them with sticks, kicked them, jumped on them and throttled two of them with car tubes. At least 63 San men have been tortured for hunting in the past three years and 53 have been arrested this year alone.


Top EU officials are to meet key energy players in the seaside resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, for talks today in a bid to boost imports from North Africa and the Middle East to reduce the bloc’s excessive dependency on oil and gas from Russia.

The trial of white Zimbabwean farmers charged with resisting eviction from land targeted for seizure has been postponed to December as the state has failed to present documents requested by defence lawyers. An estimated 600 of the previous 4 500 white farmers remain on the land.

Gunmen in speed boats have attacked a Nigerian navy vessel near a river estuary on the country’s oil-rich delta coast, the latest sign of escalating violence since the region’s main militant group resumed attacks targeting the oil industry. Christopher Musa, a commander of the military force charged with security in the oil region, said the attack occurred overnight near the Penington River estuary. He gave no further details and would not say if there were casualties.
