SOS Bushmen

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) will  discuss Botswana's refusal to allow the Kalahari Bushmen to hunt in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Survival International said on Friday.

The London-based NGO had submitted a report to the committee (UNHRC) detailing the Botswana government's failure to implement a December High Court ruling.

The court found that the Bushmen, of whom all but a handful had been previously relocated by the government outside of the reserve, should be allowed to return and hunt there.

The government claimed the Bushmen were harming the environment of the CKGR and illegally using guns, instead of traditional weapons, for hunting.

It also claims the court ruling applied only to those Bushmen named in the court suit.

Survival director Stephen Corry said, "The Botswana government still wants to keep the Bushmen off their ancestral lands."
