Botswana: San Rights Groups Split

A split has emerged among groups campaigning against relocation of the San Bushmen from Botswana's Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR).

The Working Group of Indigenous Minorities in Southern Africa (WIMSA), an umbrella group of rights NGOs, issued a statement from their head office in Windhoek, Namibia, earlier this month, saying that the London-based NGO, Survival International (SI), did not have a mandate to speak on behalf of all the San.

SI has run a vociferous campaign alleging that San rights in the CKGR have been trampled in order to make way for diamond explorations in the reserve - charges that both the government and its mining partner, De Beers, have denied.

Diamonds remain central to Botswana's economic health, accounting for 70 percent of foreign currency earnings.

 Il Kalahari è il quarto deserto al mondo per estensione (520 mila kmq, il più vasto è il Sahara, con 7.970.000 kmq), si trova nell'Africa meridionale e si estende in 4 nazioni (coprendo il 70% del Botswana e interessando Namibia, Zimbabwe e Sudafrica). Da almeno 20 mila anni è la terra dei Boscimani, popolo nomade che vive di caccia e che da milioni di persone si è ridotto a circa 100 mila, dopo le persecuzioni razziali avvenute soprattutto in Botswana. Oggi, molti dei Boscimani obbligati ad abbandonare le loro terre vivono in zone inadatte alla caccia e alla raccolta di frutti e sono costretti a sopravvivere di agricoltura o lavorando come braccianti nelle fattorie.


De Beers battles with Survival The diamonds giant is under fire over the forcible relocation of the Bushmen of the Kalahari.

The Bushmen of the Kalahari have a new and unexpected protector - Lily Cole, the striking supermodel who is the face of De Beers, the diamond giant. Survival International, the pressure group that campaigns on behalf of tribal peoples, says that Cole is refusing to work again for the huge former monopolist, having been alerted to allegations that the Bushmen are being evicted from their homes in Botswana to make way for diamond mines. It says that Cole is only the latest model to take a stand after being apprised of the forcible relocation of around 2,000 Bushmen - also known as the San or Basarwa - from land not far from where the world's finest diamonds are mined. "The supermodel Iman famously quit as the face of De Beers after meeting with Survival International,'' it says. And it claims that the British model, Erin O'Connor, had distanced herself from De Beers and that Julie Christie, the actress, is backing a campaign to boycott De Beers.

Le mannequin britannique Lily Cole ne posera plus pour les diamants De Beers, s'est félicitée mardi l'association Survival, qui accuse le diamantaire d'être à l'origine de l'exil des Bushmen du Kalahari (Afrique australe), ce que De Beers dément.

"Je n'étais pas au courant de la situation lorsque j'ai accepté de faire les photos", a indiqué la jeune femme, citée par cette association de défense des droits de l'Homme qui ne cache pas avoir fait pression sur elle.
